When someone passes away, their assets and liabilities must be collected, accounted for, and distributed according to their will or (if no will exists) under New Zealand’s intestacy rules. This process is called estate administration.
It can involve applying for Probate (if there’s a will) or Letters of Administration (if there isn’t), selling or transferring property, paying debts and taxes, and distributing funds to beneficiaries.
